In all, we will conduct fire
safety classes to nearly 600 children. The Lawrenceville Vol. Fire Department, and
Newell Vol. Fire Department help us make this a reality. We work together as one
to protect and educate our community and our children. In the days following
each class, viewers should check this
site for photos of individual classes. Along with videos, refreshments, and
safety talks, each class should look forward to visits from CVFD’s fire safety
mascot, rides on the fire trucks, and a demonstration from “Bear”. Bear is
Chester’s real life fire dog. Bear
demonstrates how to “Stop ,Drop, and
Roll” (what to do if your clothes catch fire) and how to “crawl” low under
smoke (how you would safely escape a smoke-filled room).
In addition, the Fire Prevention
Week 2005 T.V. commercial will air on Comcast Cable Systems throughout the week
of October 9th- 15th on the following channels around the
clock- The Family Channel,
The Weather Channel, The History Channel, Nickelodeon,
MSNBC, ESPN2 TNT, and VH1. The
commercial will focus on this year’s FPW theme: “Use Candles With Care!”
The Chester Vol. Fire Department
will also sponsor a full- page color ad to run in “The Review” daily newspaper on Sunday October 9th.
The public service ad will also focus on this year’s Fire Prevention Week
theme: “Use Candles With Care!” and
include safety tips relating to candle use and statistics on candle fires. Also included in the ad is the 2005
department photo which features Chester’s hovercraft water rescue vehicle. This “boat” is a one-of-a- kind watercraft
in the Ohio Valley. Last year it was credited for helping rescue over 40 people. Chester firefighters used it in neighboring
Lisbon, Ohio following flash flooding from a severe thunderstorm in August, as
well as flooding in the tri-state area in September after the remnants of
hurricane Ivan and Jean drenched the area in 7-8 inches of rain. The craft was called to rescue people from
Weirton, West Virginia to Independence Pennsylvania, and Calcutta Ohio. It is through the generous donations of the
people who support us in part by buying our “Fall Bash” tickets that we are able to buy the equipment to provide
these services.
On Monday October 3rd,
the mayor of Chester Will officially proclaim October 9th- 15th
as Fire Prevention Week” in Chester during city council meeting at 7:00 P.M. in
council chambers. This yearly tradition will further promote our message on
fire safety.
Chester firefighters look forward
to Fire Prevention Week each year. With
our safety classes at the schools, the television commercial, the newspaper
public service announcement, and our other public awareness campaigns, we reach
thousands each year. While we hope no
one EVER finds themselves in a fire, we also realize fire strikes without
warning sometimes. If one family…one
child survives a fire because of our educational efforts…we will have succeeded
in our attempts.
